Census R: Track Day and Race Versions

The Census is usually optimised as a road car. However, the engineering features of the structure, chassis and power train which are so highly praised on the road Census are the perfect basis for an excellent track car.

The all round double wishbone suspension has as standard adjustment for:

  • damper rates;
  • ride height;
  • camber (front and rear);
  • toe (front and rear).

Off-the shelf modifications available for the Census R include

  • ACB10 road legal track tyre: soft compound, minimum tread 195 / 45 VR 15 Avon ACB10 with stiffer sidewalls and lighter weight than the standard 195 / 50 VR 15 ZV1 road tyre
  • 6.5 inch wide Compomotive motorsport wheels (6 inch on standard road car)
  • Ride height reduced by 45mm at the front and 25mm at the rear (which keeps the car acceptable for road use)
  • Race type seat driver’s side and delete passenger seat
  • Race harness(es) and additional bracing on roll over hoop
  • Lightweight flywheel
  • Replace starter catalysts with free flow fabricated manifold
  • Change diff’ ratio / Locking diff’ / Hydratrak limited slip diff’ (specification to suit customer)
  • Oil pressure and temperature gauge and monitoring system
  • Extinguisher system
  • Grooved and drilled brake discs
  • Selection of alternative brake pad compounds
  • Reduced compliance inner suspension bushes

For a track only car, some extreme modifications are available.

  • Even lower ride heights
  • Delete all unnecessary trim
  • Delete wipers, heaters and other road only equipment
  • Full roll cage
  • Specially made lightweight body panels and glazing
  • slick tyres

Total Sports Car published a review of the prototype Census R in February 2003. Edited highlights are:

"That innovative and frankly excellent UK sports car manufacturer, FBS Engineering…I found it to have sublime handling…a meaner stance giving the whole package a more purposeful profile...the sort of car that you immediately feel at home in and doesn't intimidate at all...this ‘R’ spec car has milestone levels of cornering ability and the harder I pushed, the better it became...very compliant and is relatively firmly set-up, yet doesn't threaten to loosen fillings...swift acceleration and a beautiful exhaust note. Great stuff...must be added to your shortlist of ‘possibles’...I guarantee that you will be pleasantly gobsmacked."
